UPVC Window and Door Installation Guidelines |
√ | 01. | The Selection of Windows and Doors | Refer to the project drawings to confirm the style and numbers of windows and doors. Make a selection according to the local wind stresses and the window/door dimensions, as well as the height of the building for selecting the steel reinforcement thickness. | According to the size of the window and door openings, account for how much materials will be required. |
|
√ | 02. | Cutting Profiles, Milling Drainage Holes, and the Lock Hole | Use double-angle saws to cut the main profiles. The profiles should have an extra 2.5-3mm in length to accommodate welding. Length tolerance should be less than 1mm, the angle tolerance should be less than 0.5° | A drainage hole should be milled on the UPVC frame, while the sash needs a drainage hole as well as a depressurizing hole. The drainage hole should be 4~5mm in diameter, and 30mm in length - the holes should not interfere or puncture the steel reinforcement. | If you install the door lock and espagnolette you must choose the correct drill size. |
|
√ | 03. | Installing Steel-Reinforcement. | Windows with dimensions above the national standard should incorporate steel-reinforcement. | Where the hardware has been installed or there is a welded joint, there should be steel-reinforcement. | The steel-reinforcement should be installed prior to welding, being careful not to affect the welding area. The steel should be affixed to the profile in at least 3 places, and the space between each screw should be less than 300mm, and the distance to the end of the steel bar should be than 100mm. | On cross and T joints, the steel-reinforcement can be installed after the profile has been melted, and the welding blocks are raised, before the edges are soldered together. After welding, fix the steel-reinforcement to the profile. |
|
√ | 04. | Welding and Corner Cleaning | The welding plate temperature must be 240ºC~250ºC, welding pressure should be 0.3~0.35Mpa, and clamping pressure between 0.4~0.6Mpa. Melting time is 20~30s, cooling time 25~30s. | Corner cleaning can be done manually or mechanically, but should be done no earlier than 10 minutes after welding, and and no later than 30 mins after welding. |
|
√ | 05. | Brush Weather-Stripping | The brush weather-stripping should fit the window sash and screen sash dimensions, and the length should be 3~6mm less than the length of the upvc profile, to avoid affecting welding. | Installation of Hardware | Hardware may be installed on finished upvc window frames. There are several principles for hardw are: strong, correct location, suitable function, and easy to replace. The hardware must be fastened with self-tapping screws instead of wooden screws, and must have 4mm. The hardware should be located according to the standard. |
|
√ | 06. | Installation of Glass Pane | The glass should be set on the glass spacers, then fixed into the sash by pressing the glazing bead into place. |
|
UPVC Window and Door Installation and Tolerable Specifications |
1,According to national standard GB5824, windows with the dimensions below must not exceed the following tolerances: |
Size of window or door (mm) | Less than 2400 | 2400-4800 | More than 4800 | Tolerance(mm) | +-5 | +-10 | +-15 |
|
2,Main tools: electric hammer, electric drill, Phillips screwdriver, screwdriver, hammer, rubber hammer, drill bits, etc. Main measuring tools: level, suspension wire hammer, tape measure, square, ruler, etc. Others: safety helmet, safety belt, herringbone ladder, rope, etc. |
3,Finished window and door frames should be stored in a clean and flat area, in a space without rain, sunshine, or corrosive materials. Window and door frames should not be stored directly on the ground, but rather on blocks or wood pallets. The finished window and door frames should not lean on a wall at more than 70°to avoid tipping over. The temperature of the storage area should be less than 50ºC, and with a distance from heat sources of more than 1m. Storage time should be less than 2 months. |
4,When handling and transporting windows and doors please handle carefully. When carrying or lifting the windows into place a soft material should be used in contact with the profile. |
5,Double-check window/door openings, drawings, and finished products for the correct specifications. Check that the profile, hardware, and protective-film are in good condition before installing. If the protective film falls off, please attach a new layer before installing the window/door. |
Window and Door Installation Process |
A:Process Flow Chart |
Clean the opening → locate installation area → settle the x and y axis → make level → put frame in →adjust → fix to the wall → apply elastic sealing agent→ apply caulking agent → clean debris and dust → install sash → install edge profiles→ install sash screen →install hardware → clean the surface → clean drainage hole → take off the protective film →self-check → check completely |
B,Installation Process |
1.Put the windows or doors in vertical position to the window or door's opening, find and mark the mid line up and down the frame. If it is a multi-level building, find the vertical line. |
2.When installing windows, pay attention to the window opening style, the frames and sashes without rollers installed, ect. If the glass in a picture window is already installed, you should take the glass off and mark the place. |
3.When installing the frame, the horizontal and vertical mid axis lines should align with the openings mid-lines, and confirm the frames location with the engineers drawings. Adjust x and y axis, level, and corner center to make sure that tolerances are within the standards requirements. |
4.Door installation should happen before the groundwork is finished, and opening style should be taken into account with care taken to avoid deformation of the frame. If the door frame does not include a bottom sash, the side sashes should be an extra 30mm taller, while if the door has a bottom sash it should leave 10mm for the ground work. Adjust the doors level, axis, and corner angles. |
5.Expansion bolts and fixed block installation position should be 150mm~200mm from the corner, and the distance between each other should be less than 600mm. After joining the window, use self-tapping screw to fix the windows on each side, with a distance of 600mm, and a distance of 200mm to the top of the frame. Adjust then fix the window or door to the wall. |
6.Check the position, space, line, then fill the wall and frame splice area with an elastic material, like mineral wool, EPS ect. After filling this, take the shims away. The elastic material should fill the entire gap, even after adjusting the window frame, filling the wall and frame gap. The sealant should fill the perimeter without gaps or cracks. |
7. A. The glass should fit in the sash. After cutting glass install vertically with spacer, and mark the size and window number. | B. When installing the glass, small glass panes can be moved by hand, but larger panes should use suction cups during handling. Clean the sash and glass before installing. The glass installation and spacer shouldn't affect or obstruct the usage of the drainage holes. | C. When installing the glazing bead, start from the shortest one to the longest one. The glazing bead should keep neat, and the corner profiles joint place gap should be less than 1mm. Check and adjust the glazing bead's length, position, appearance, joint position, and steadiness. |
|
8.Hardware installation should be according to the standard, in a good location, with ease of opening. After installing the hardware, the surfaces should be cleaned, and after checking that there are no mistakes, remove the protective film. If the window or door is dirty, one can use a water soluble detergent to clean (don't use an acetone chemical solvent). |
Window and Door Installation Check |
1,Check the window and door quantity. According to the door and window type, check at least 5% of products, but no less than 3 pieces |
2,Check that all window and door types, specifications, opening directions and installation positions meet the design standard. |
3,Installed windows and doors should be secure and level, and the gap between frames and the wall should be fully filled without cracks. The material and method for filling the gap should meet the standard. |
4,The window/door should open and function conveniently. The surface of the window and door after installation should be clean, without any scratches or dirt. |
Window and Door Installment Problems and Solutions |
How to Avoid Leakage |
UPVC windows and doors reward the users through its corrosion resistance, tight seal, sound insulation, energy savings and low price. The following are reasons and solutions for leakage's. Leaking during replacement of old windows: when changing old windows you must clean the surface of the sill as it may have old debris, and the water may get in from those gaps. |
1,Solution: after taking off the old window, one can use cement to cover the surface of the window opening. After fixing the edges, fill the gaps with pvc foam, waiting until it solidifes to make it neat and even, and then apply caulking to the window or door. |
2,Leakage during installation of new windows/doors: As some people use a kind of installation method, which the size is not strictly to the standard, cement the window opening edges manually after install window, there may be gaps or discrepancies in their work. Also, its possible that the protective film on the window was not totally removed, leaving behind pieces that got stuck between the window frame and the wall opening. Solutions: After applying cement, install the window. The window size should strictly adhere to the drawings, and the cement work should be neat. After installation, fill the seal with rubber, and with pvc foam in the middle. Attentions: 1). When applying cement to the window opening, use a water absorbent material; 2). When cementing the outside window opening, the application tool should not touch the window frame, especially the inside of the frame. When using tiles to decorate the wall, the outside wall shouldn't have any cavities. |
3.The lower frame should be fixed on one side. It should be fixed on an internal location. The easiest area to be affected by leakage is the bottom frames gap. If this area is made watertight, the window/door will be more weather proof. Use silicone to protect the sealing area for a long time. |
4,Leakage from PVC window/door corners: Some windows are designed as an upper fixed window, lower sliding, especially on the balcony. When making windows, there may be some discrepancies, which may result in different window/door dimensions from the drawings. The gap may cause the leakage. |
5,Leakage from the Window/Door glazing bead: There may be two reasons - firstly that the glazing bead may not be fully installed, and secondly that the sash may not have a drianage hole milled. Solutions: the glazing bead size must meet the drawings specfications; another solution is to mill a drainage hole in the lower bottom side of the outer-facing sash surface. The top of the sash profile should have an air-pressure equalizing hole, and the glass should be mounted on spacers. |
Why don't the profiles weld cleanly? |
Uneven welding joints will affect the beauty of the window. There are three possible reasons for this problem. |
1,The welding machine's front and rear pressure clamps are not on the same level. After adjusting it, the issue will be corrected. |
2,The profile's cross-sectional measurements may have some discrepancies. According to national standard GB/T8814-2004, the cross-section allows a +-0.5mm straightness deviation tolerance. So if one profile is 60.3mm paired with a 59.7mm mullion, during welding there will be a 0.6mm difference from the drawings. Solution: put a suitable block under the smaller sized mullion, raising it about 0.3mm, thus the tolerance is only 0.3mm. |
3,Amateur welding blocks. The welding jig is designed according to the upvc profiles surface shape and size. Its thickness should be 0.5mm smaller than the PVC profiles. When pressure is applied during welding, the profiles will have at most a 0.5mm deformation, and the welding jig will take off the pressure. Thus the pressure can be 6 bar. Without the professional welding jig,the welding pressure is maybe 2~3 bar, at most 4 bar, so there needs to be a similar sized profile at the back pressure clamps to absorb some of the pressure, so that it can be welded smoothly. Recently, welding jig equipment can be found in large upvc profile machinery companies. |
How to avoid cracked welded corners in winter? |
UPVC profiles is a thermoplastic cold shortening material, so when the temperature is low, the profiles will contract and become rigid. Welded corner cracking is very common problem in UPVC windows and doors. It is not only because of the profiles' quality, but also the processing, installation and unreasonable use. The following is how to reduce the occurrence of cracking: |
1,Maintain the temperature above 15ºC in the welding plant, and store the profiles for over 24 hours. When installing the glass in winter, it should be done in a room with a temperature of more than 20ºC. The window sash should be stored more than 16h before installing glass. In cold areas, its best to use a pre-heating welding machine to observe possible stress lines when welding. |
2,Control welded corner cleaning depth to 0.3-0.5mm. If the thickness of the profile is 2mm, the depth should be less than 0.3mm. In especially cold areas, one can use a knife to manually clean the corners, without worrying about the shape of the groove. |
3,When cleaning the welded lines make sure not to damage or scratch the materials. |
4,Pay attention to the sliding window aluminum roller and glazing bead length. Glazing bead size must suit the window sash length, or it can be 0.5mm shorter. This is to ensure that when the profile expands or contracts, the glazing bead will not have more stress. |
5,Change the glazing bead installation method: Make sure that neither edge of the glazing bead is too tight, it is better if you use a machine to strictly install the long side of sash and then install the glazing bead. If you install the glazing bead in the construction plant, we suggest to install the short side first, while the window frame is upright. Avoid damaging the surface. When splicing joint window frames, clean the scrapes and dirty areas around the welded joints. Don't hammer or hit the frame vigorously, and hit the frame more than 150mm away from the window corner. Don't hammer the mesh sash. In winter, if installing windows outside the temperature should be above 5ºC. If the fixed window needs to be install outside, before installing the glazing bead pre-heat the window corner to avoid cracking. If the windows/doors are handled roughly during transport or installation, it may crack. So we should transport and install in accordance to the standard. |
